South Roof

South Roof Design Considerations

  • Barrier free accessibility
  • The Hugh Garner Green Roof Garden design is FULLY accessible for wheelchairs, scooters and other mobility devices.  This includes all paths and seating areas
  • Movement flow around the roof
  • Rain shelter
  • Gardening spaces
  • Weight load studies
  • Roof Anchors for Window Washers
  • View
  • Snow weight
  • Shade
  • Wind
  • Sun

South Roof Design Elements

  • Gazebo and Pergola
  • Stream and water plants
  • Large planters for shrubs and trees
  • Planters for long grasses and perennials and wild flowers
  • Medium size planters for wildflowers
  • Seating incorporated into planters
  • Trellis
  • Picnic tables and seating incorporated into planters and wall benches
  • Birdhouses

North Roof

North Roof Design Considerations

The North Roof, though not accessible by users, will also be “greened” to improve the lifespan of our roof as well as provide insulation and space for the implementation of alternative energy sources.  An “extensive” green roof will be built on this section, which will mostly be covered with a field of hardy low alpine planting

North Roof Design Elements
Energy and water saving systems such as:

  • Evaporative cooling system
  • Flat plate solar collectors to heat water and reduce natural gas consumption
  • Photovoltaic panels to power sprinkler pump and reduce electricity use
  • Ventilation for space below roof by installing skylight
  • Summer passive cooling
  • Storm-water reservoir/irrigation system
