Completion of Phase 2 of Hugh Garner’s Green Roof
Honoured sponsors, donors, media and guests will soon catch a first glimpse of Hugh Garner’s South roof, Phase 2 of a 3-Phase Green Roof Project. Phase 1 installed the water proof and root repellent roof membrane in 2007 and Phase 2 opens the fully accessible South roof (at 8,000 square feet)on May 26, 2010. Hugh Garner will have Canada’s largest residential Green Roof when Phase 3′s North Roof (14,000 square feet) is completed.
Media Event to open Phase 2 of Hugh Garner Co-op
On May 26, 2010, Hugh Garner Co-op will open Phase 2 of its Green Roof project, 8 years in the making. Honoured guests will include Toronto’s Deputy Mayor, Joe Pantelone, our donors and sponsors including Live Green Toronto, Toronto Region Conservation Area, Toshiba (see full list of sponsors and donors).
HG Green Roof in Doors Open Toronto
On May 27-28, 2010, Hugh Garner Co-op, located in historic Cabbagetown, will host the first public tour of its newly-opened Green Roof in this year’s annual Doors Open Toronto. We expect to welcome hundreds of visitors to our fully accessible South Roof with environmental features that include a special water proof and root repellent membrane (the roof’s skin), a water retention system, trees and plants.
Completion of Phase 1
On September 21, 2006, residents of the 8-story Hugh Garner Co-op building, joined by Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone, Architect Monica Kuhn and Alex Waugh, Chair of the Ontario Trillium Foundation local Grant Review Team, marked a milestone with the completion of Phase 1 of Canada’s largest residential green roof, and the beginning of its second phase.

Trillium Foundation Recognition
On Friday October 22, 2004, Hugh Garner Co-op received a plaque in recognition of the Trillium Foundation’s support of the co-op’s Green Roof Project.
At the media event, a plaque was presented by Mr. Robin Cardozo, CEO of the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The architects and planners who were on hand answered questions about the project.
Also present were Hugh Garner’s MPP, The Honourable George Smitherman, Minister of Health for Ontario, Pam McConnell Councilor for Ward 28 of the City of Toronto, and other community leaders and involved co-op members.
The event took place in the party room at Hugh Garner Co-op.
